The mission of the Reference Department is to meet the informational needs of the University community as defined in the Library's "Mission Statement" and to support the curriculum by working closely with faculty and students in meeting their reference and research needs. The Department offers the following services: Reference Assistance, Library Instruction, Interlibrary Services, and Online Searching.
Services
Interlibrary Services
The Interlibrary Services unit of the Reference Department borrows books
and obtains photocopies of articles which we do not own from other institutions for our library patrons. This service supplements and enhances the information available in our collections. Undergraduates are encouraged to exhaust resources at Montclair State before requesting material via Interlibrary Services.
Library Instruction
Library instruction classes are available for all undergraduate and graduate students, day and evening, Monday through Saturday. Each session is planned to meet the particular needs of the students in the class - from an orientation tour and general introduction to the Library for new students to an introduction to materials available in a particular subject area (e.g. biology, business, & law) for undergraduate students taking a course in
their major field, to classes on the use of specific databases (e.g. ERIC, PsycLit) to a specialized class on research materials available, in both print and electronic formats, for graduate students doing a research proposal. When appropriate, these classes will include information on sources available on the Internet and instruction on how to evaluate these sources. Please call Patricia Sanders at (973)655-7144 for further information.
Online Searching
Faculty, students and staff can request online searches if they need to supplement their research or have exhausted
all other available sources. The Library subscribes to two database services, Dialog and FirstSearch. Each database offers access to a large array of indexes representing a variety of subject areas. Anyone interested in requesting an online search should contact Thomas Trone at (973) 655-7146.
Reference
Research questions as well as general reference questions should be directed to the Reference Desk. Reference Librarians are available during Library hours to answer these inquiries. In addition, you can send a reference question via e-mail by accessing the "Ask the Librarian" form listed below. For additional information, call (973) 655-4291.
