Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 5th edition.

BOOK

Author’s Last name, First initial.  (Publication year).  Title of Book.  Publisher
             Location:  Publisher name.

[List all authors last name first, separated by commas, with an ampersand before the last author. In an edited book, put the editors names in the author position, followed by (Ed.) or (Eds.).]

Example:

Mandler, G.  (1997).  Human nature explored.  New York:  Oxford University
              Press.

 

WORK IN AN ANTHOLOGY

Author’s Last name, First initial.  (Publication year).  Title of Article or Chapter
             Cited.  In Editor’s First initial. Last name (Ed.),  Title of Book  (pp. xx-xx). 
             Publisher Location:  Publisher name. 

Example:

House, D.V. & McDonald, M.J.  (1998).  Realist brains and virtual conversations. 
             In W.E. Smythe (Ed.), Toward a psychology of persons  (pp.179-220).  
             Mahwah, NJ:  L. Erlbaum.

 

SCHOLARLY JOURNAL ARTICLE

Author’s lastname, first initial.  (Publication year).  Title of the article.  Name of
             Journal
, volume(issue), pages cited xx-xx.

[Add issue# only if each issue is individually paginated.]

Example:

Vardi, L.  (1996)  Imagining the harvest in early modern Europe.  The American
           Historical Review,
 101, 1357-1397.

 

MAGAZINE or NEWSPAPER ARTICLE

Author’s Last name, First initial.  (Publication year, month day).  Title of article. 
              Name of Magazine or Newspaper, volume, pages of article cited xx-xx.

Example:

Weyermann, D.  (1998, April).  And then there were none.  Harper’s Magazine,
            296, 60-69.

[If the periodical is published once every two weeks or more frequently,give the publication date as (year, month day); if it is published monthly or less frequently, give the month (or other designation) and year]

[If an article runs on successive pages from beginning to end, give the beginning and ending pages; if not, give the first page followed by a +.]

 

PERIODICAL ARTICLE ONLINE

Author’s Last name, First initial.  (Publication date).  Title of article.  Title of
             periodical
, volume, xx-xx. Retrieved date, from database name.

Example:

Hughes, C. & Cutting, A.  (1999).  Nature, nurture, and individual differences in
             early understanding of mind.  Psychological Science, 10, 429-432.          
             Retrieved January 18, 2000 from Infotrac.

 

ENCYCLOPEDIA or DICTIONARY ENTRY

Author’s name Last name, First initial.  (Publication year).  Title of entry.  In Ed.
             Editor’s First initial Last name. Title of work (Vol. #, pp. xx-xx).  Publisher
             Location:  Publisher name.

[Skip editor if there is none.]

Example:

Hunker, H.L.  (1997).  Columbus, Christopher.  In. The Encyclopedia Americana
            International Edition
. 
(Vol.7, pp. 344-352).  Danbury, CT:  Grolier, Inc.

[If no author is given, use the title of the entry to begin the citation.]

 

ERIC REPORTS

Last name, First initial.  (Publication date).  Title of ERIC Report.  Place of
           Publication: Publisher.  (ERIC Document Reproduction Service No.
           ED######)

Example:

Dalrymple, N.  (1979).  Learning Together.  Bloomington, IN:  Indiana Resource
           Center for Autism, Indiana University.  (ERIC Document Reproduction
           Service No. ED363978)

 

WORLD WIDE WEB

Author Last name, First initial.  (Publication date).  Title of Web Site.  Retrieved
             date, from publishing organization’s name  Web Site: 
             http://insert.web.address.here

Example:

Green, C.D.  (1997).  Classics in the History of Psychology.  Retrieved January 8,
            2002 from York University, Toronto, Canada  Web site:
